Candle tunneling refers to when a candle burns straight down the center, creating a deep hole in the wax instead of melting evenly across the top, and to avoid it, you need to ensure the candle burns long enough on the first light to melt the wax all the way to the edges, regularly trim the wick, and place the candle away from drafts; essentially, letting the top layer of wax melt completely before extinguishing the flame each time you burn it.
Key points to prevent candle tunneling:
1. Burn long enough on the first light:
When you first light a candle, let it burn for a sufficient amount of time (usually a couple of hours) to melt the wax across the entire surface, creating a full melt pool.
2. Trim the wick regularly:
Before each burn, trim the wick to about 1/4 inch to prevent it from becoming too long and creating an uneven flame.
3. Avoid drafts:
Place your candle in a draft-free area as air currents can cause uneven burning.
4: Choose the right wick size:
Ensure the wick size is appropriate for the candle size; a wick too small won't melt the wax evenly, leading to tunneling.
5: Understand "wax memory":
Because of wax memory, the pattern of the previous burn can affect the next burn, so it's important to establish a good melt pool from the beginning.
What to do if your candle is already tunneling:
Use the foil trick:
To help melt the sides of the candle, wrap a piece of aluminum foil around the top of the candle, leaving a small opening for the flame.
Burn for a longer duration:
If a candle has started tunneling, try burning it for a longer period to allow the wax to melt more evenly.
